Until recent years the chapter sponsored the American History Essay contest, rewarding the winners with a United States Savings Bond or a cash award. The DAR Good Citizens Award has been awarded to high school seniors from approximately 10 high schools in the area. For nearly 50 years, the chapter has purchased DAR grave markers for our deceased members through generous donations by chapter.
The DAR American History Essay Contest is open to all 5th through 8th grade students in Naperville area schools. This year’s topic was “The Voyage of the Mayflower.” 58 students in 6th through 8th grades entered this national DAR essay contest. Athena Chen, an 8th grader from Kennedy Junior High School, is the overall chapter winner. Emma Breese, a 6th grader from Kennedy, was named 6th.

The committee for the DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest was created in 1934 and was originally known as the DAR Good Citizenship Pilgrimage, because the state winners, senior girls only, received a trip to Washington, D.C. In 1952, the name was changed to DAR Good Citizens Committee and monetary awards were presented to the state and national winners.

The Putnam Hill Chapter of the NSDAR announced its chapter winners for the 2016-17 American History Essay Contest sponsored nationally by the Daughters of the American Revolution. First place winner Annabel Zhou (5th grade) is from North Mianus, as is the second-place winner, Lucy Li.
